Experimental and Conceptual Drawing with Jo Williams
Jo’s experimental and conceptual drawing classes are devised to change participant’s perceptions and bring them out of their comfort zone in a respectful, safe and protected environment.
Create works using a diverse range of drawing mediums, papers and fixatives based on music, memory, storytelling and concepts.   Develop your own mark making using rubbings, collage, charcoal, graphite, oil pastels, inks, chalk pastels and pencils. During the process of creating works participants will learn about space, shape, composition, tone, line and colour. Participants will also learn to trust during blindfold drawing and music as a sub-conscious stimulant that evokes different responses on the paper. Most of all it will be FUN. So come play with Jo who looks forward to meeting you at the beautiful Amamoor Lodge.

Artist Statement
Many artists inspire my work, Rosalie Gascoigne, Ian Gentle, Rothko, Colin McCahon, Milton Avery.
But I am also inspired by my environment, reconciliation, lyrics from a song, a concept, an idea, a story. When I am attracted to any one of the above I try to translate my emotional response by visually capturing the essence or ‘soul’ of that particular thing.
So my dilemma as an artist is to visually translate an emotion through an image.
The subjects that I am attracted to are like vessels or metaphors for whatever is happening in my life. This of course is a retrospective awareness and I am always amazed at the subconscious selection of things. When I am awestruck, hypnotised or besotted by something I have tunnel vision and see nothing else except the object of my desires or what has moved me. Yet to convey this feeling visually all sorts of things get in the way. These superfluous things have to be stripped away to arrive at the complex simplicity and purity of what inspired me in the first place. A tutor once said “beat your canvas till it sings”.   I have never forgotten this visual philosophy and it is my sole aim.   To have succeeded is to hear the song without seeing the bruises.
